They were on the point of reaching the summit when a snowstorm broke out. The expression be due to, on the other hand, indicates that something is expected to happen at a particular time in the future. It is followed by ‘infinitive’ forms: The tournament is due to be held next month. They are due to appear in the sports segment of tonight’s news show. Paddle surfing is due to be included in the next Olympic Games. Be set to is another expression we can use to talk about the future. It refers to something that is ready to happen and always goes with an ‘infinitive’ form: Our new sports gear is set to be released next week. The opening ceremony is set to be held on July 21st. The Japanese team are set to break their own record after their results from last year. Last but not least, be bound to can be used to describe an action or event that is very likely or certain to happen. Be bound to is always followed by an ‘infinitive’ form: Considering their line-up, the local team are bound to win this match by a landslide. Conflicts are bound to arise when athletes are accused of doping. They are bound to go down in history as the strongest water polo team in the history of the tournament. These expressions can also be used in the past tense! In such cases, they refer to the future as seen from the past: He was about to become a worldwide star when he suddenly decided to retire. McDermott was on the verge of leaving the field when her coach implored her to stay. The Olympic Games were set to be celebrated in Tokyo when the war broke out.
